Kicking off a multi-event celebration for the Multimedia Arts program

The Benilde Multimedia Arts (MMA) Festival unfolded its workshops and activities with its opening ceremony on July 8, held at the 10th floor of the Design + Arts Campus (D+AC). The event kicked off a month-long celebration of the diverse skillset and creativity found in the MMA degree program.

Both student organizers and MMA faculty brought together an exciting glimpse into what’s to come under the MMA festival from July 8 to 31 with student-led events, exhibits and an art market. From speeches to raffle prizes, the opening ceremony served as a formal start for the Multimedia Arts festival.

Multiple mediums of creativity

Colorful lines of red, purple, green, and yellow decorated the 10th floor lobby in line with the event’s branding as students gathered for the opening ceremony. Upon registration, students had one raffle ticket alongside a food stub for ice cream, as well as their choice of sticker from multiple designs. A speech was given by MMA chairperson Ms. Katrina Juane as she gave remarks commemorating the course and how they get to celebrate another MMA festival this 2025.

This was only the beginning of a multi-event journey as there were teasers for the events under the MMA festival: from the “Design Labs” competition, to the MMA art market titled  “Fortunes,” all the way to the capstone plenary where the top MMA thesis projects are presented, excitement filled the air for what was in store.

“It's mostly to celebrate our course and promote it. A lot of the sub-events are about learning new skills [and] talking to industry people,” organizer and ID122 AB-MMA student Ethan Cruz said when asked about what the festival was all about.

For ID123 AB-MMA student Isabella Acol, the MMA festival serves as an inspiration and source of pride, “Actually, I think this is pretty cool because it kind of gives us some sort of motivation. And, like, we're not just a big jack-of-all-trades [course]–we're showing what we can do here as MMA [students].”

Where artistry and professionalism collide

“I think it's a very good way to learn new things and also see what business is like outside of being a student and tips from actual career people,” Cruz mentioned when explaining the importance of the MMA festival to multimedia arts students. It has become a place not just to showcase talent, but to explore what else art has to offer, as well as equipping students with skills for the industry.

A message Acol said to fellow students was that, “In this course [...] you're getting a taste of everything. Instead of thinking of the results, enjoy the journey in your creative endeavors,” a reminder for students in a program where they take on different projects and learn skills outside their comfort zone.

The opening ceremony invites the Benildean community to take part in an ongoing process of persistence, discovery and shared stories. Follow Benilde Multimedia Arts on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated with their upcoming events.
