The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Blazers and Lady Blazers swept the Heavy Bombers and Lady Bombers respectively, both 3-0, today, March 1, at the San Beda University Gym in Manila City.
Reigning champs for a reason
The Lady Blazers established the tempo of the game from the first serve to kick off the first set. Both teams traded points until a service error disrupted the four-point rhythm that put the Lady Blazers ahead as Clydel Catarig led the Taft squad. The Shaw squad answered with a late push that kept the pressure on but struggled with errors as the set closed out in favor of the ladies in green and white, 1-0.
Wielyn Estoque’s fierce scoring became the highlight of the second set as the Lady Bombers’ errors inspired a four-point swing to capture the lead. Momentum quickly carried into another explosive five-point run with sharp attacks from Catarig and a well-placed ace from team captain Mycah Go to widen the gap 23-17. Tied 20-20 at the third set, costly mistakes continued to plague JRU, allowing Benilde to secure the clean sweep, 3-0.
Perfect on the other spectrum
Meanwhile, the Blazers faced the Heavy Bombers on the hardcourt next. The Taft Squad led by Rocky Motol and Mike Balbacal smashed through their opponents’ defense to secure a 2-0 lead.
However, the men in blue and gold did not backed down, with Harry Jim Ocay leading a counter attack against Blazer John Austero’s blocks. The Blazers steadily banked on their momentum to seal the game with a clean win, 3-0.
Catarig led the Lady Blazers with 14 points and 14 attacks, while Motol led the Blazers with 14 points, 11 attacks, and 3 blocks.
The Benilde Blazers and Lady Blazers will face the Colegio de San Juan de Letrán (CSJL) Knights and Lady Knights on Saturday, March 8, at the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Gym with a live telecast on the NCAA Philippines Facebook and YouTube pages.
