Samsung unveils eco-friendly Galaxy devices made from discarded fishing nets

Samsung's latest environment-friendly Galaxy line is constructed entirely of recycled fishing nets.

As part of its ‘Galaxy for the Planet’ campaign, South Korea-based tech giant Samsung is now recycling used fishing nets to attain its sustainability commitments for tangible climate action on its newly launched galaxy devices, including S22 5G series and Galaxy Tab S8 series, at the Galaxy Unpacked 2022 virtual event on Feb. 9.

From the new Galaxy devices that were recently revealed, Samsung will use repurposed ocean-bound plastics throughout its entire product lineup. Recycled post-consumer material (PCR) and recycled paper will be used in the devices as part of their continued endeavor to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics.

Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra

The Galaxy S22 line, which includes the standard S22 model, the S22+, and the S22 Ultra, consists of a more robust camera system, a brighter display, and a quicker processor. Under the hood of all three models is a 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, an upgrade from the S21 series' 5nm. Aside from improving performance, the new silicon of the S22 series allows phones to live longer without the need for a larger battery.

For the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung seems to incorporate the Note’s DNA throughout Ultra’s design and software. For the first time since the Galaxy Note 20, Samsung's S22 Ultra includes a hardware slot for the S Pen. Samsung also enhanced the capability of the S Pen by providing shorter latency and the ability to transcribe handwritten notes to text in 88 languages.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra also has a Note-like angular design with sharper edges, which differs substantially from the softer look of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. The 6.8-inch display of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is also evocative of the Note series.

Additionally, Samsung claims that the camera configurations in all three models benefit from the improved nighttime performance and always-stable video captures.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 starts at ₱45,990, while the Galaxy S22+ starts at ₱56,990, both of which come in four colors (Cream, Graphite, Sky Blue, and Violet). Meanwhile, Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at ₱68,990, which comes in three colors (Graphite, Red, and Sky Blue). All models are available for purchase starting today.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series

Samsung also announced the Galaxy Tab S8 tablet trio, led by the 14.6-inch Tab S8 Ultra, the first tablet to bear the "Ultra" moniker. The series is completed by the 12.4-inch Tab S8+ and the 11-inch tablet. Tab S8 aspires to be more laptop-like, with a detachable BookCover keyboard that instantly enters DeX mode, which is Samsung's works-like-a-laptop interface for its Galaxy products. To fully enable the laptop-like feature of the Tab S8, users may purchase DeX dock which is sold separately.

The 11-inch Galaxy Tab S8 starts at ₱41,990, while the 12.4-inch Tab S8+ starts at ₱63,990, which comes in three colors (graphite, silver, and pink gold). Meanwhile, the 14.6-inch Tab S8 Ultra starts at ₱77,990, which comes in graphite. All models are available for purchase starting today.

Samsung’s sustainable campaign

At the end of the virtual event, famous South Korean Boyband, BTS, helped introduce Samsung’s global campaign entitled “Galaxy for the Planet.”

During the video played at the last part of the event, Suga's remix of Galaxy's popular "Over the Horizon" song played in the background. Each member took turns holding signs that collectively warned audiences about the environmental issue the world is trying to solve.

Taking its responsibility seriously, Samsung has chosen to have the Galaxy S22 Series packaging entirely constructed of reclaimed paper. They encourage their consumers to do their part by recycling any of their discarded items.
