COMELEC releases candidates list for 2022 Elections

After much delay, the official list of 2022 Election candidates has been released, mixing both old and new names into politics.

By Sasha Davidon | Wednesday, 26 January 2022

A month after its supposed release, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) released the final list of candidates for this year’s national elections which greeted voters with the same names, dynasties, and partylists with the exception of some new politicians who stepped up to earn a spot in the government.

Among the familiar names in the list are Vicente “Tito” Sotto, Atty. Chel Diokno, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Atty. Neri Colmenares. Meanwhile, it also included new political aspirants such as Carlos Serapio, Abner Afuang, and other independent candidates.

Prior to the release of the final list on Jan. 25, COMELEC had also released the official list of party-list candidates and their order on the ballot last year. The list included 173 party-list candidates but was still subject to revisions due to the temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Supreme Court to seven candidates, namely: ARISE, IWI, Ang Tinig ng Seniors, LBP, IPEACE EPANAW, APAT-DAPAT, and UMA ILONGGO.

According to COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez, the official list was set to be released last Jan. 7, but was put on hold due to the cancellation of certificates of candidacies and nuisance candidates. One of the complications that also caused the delay were the numerous petitions against the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) of presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

From 15 presidential aspirants initially listed in December, COMELEC narrowed it to 10, including Marcos who has eight petitions against him as of January 2022, namely, three petitions to cancel his COC, one petition declaring him a nuisance candidate, and four disqualification petitions.
