With the theme “Forward: Human-Centered Design,” the College’s selected Interior Design and Architecture students bagged major and special awards in the Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA) 2020 via livestream at AYDA’s official Facebook Page, yesterday, Feb.5.
Dedicated to designing spaces which cultivate deep empathy for people, the recently concluded AYDA 2020 challenged young designers to showcase a new line of action towards innovation, taking into consideration a human-centered approach and perspective when providing design solutions.
Out of 70 school participants, three schools only made it to prominently represent in the top 10 finalists Interior Design category, namely DLS-CSB, University of Santo Tomas (UST), and University of San Carlos-Cebu (USC).
The following are the top 10 finalists in the both categories, alongside their affiliated university and output title:

- Best in Colour Choice (Interior Design): Bakhawan by Ryan Japhet A. Gablines (USC- Cebu)

- Best Green Innovation (Interior Design): Punta Salag: Siloy Eco-reserve by Ynes Sofia A. Manguerra (DLS-CSB)
- Best Green Innovation (Architecture): Eskinita by Yson Karl M. Dañez (PUP (Official))
Consequently, the major awards were announced. Winners for both categories will each receive a trophy and opportunities for internship. Cash prizes of P50,000 and P30,000 were given to gold and silver awardees, respectively. The following are the major awardees for both categories:

Silver Winner: Puyanan by Lauren Ghenrich L. Khoo (DLS-CSB)
Architecture Category
Gold Winner: Silong by Paul John A. Jandoc (University of Baguio)
Silver Winner: Estero Recycling Hub by Napoleon Marion Clarke F. Mui (UST)
Hagad and Jandoc, as this year’s AYDA Gold Award winners, will also go on to represent the Philippines in the upcoming AYDA 2020 Regional Competition in Malaysia this July 2021. Both also presented their award-winning outputs after the announcement of winners.
Additional special awards were given to Benilde as the Best College/University as the originating university of the Gold award winner in the Interior Design Category. Benilde faculty IDr. Karol Ann P. Antonio, as Hagad’s mentor, was also given award and recognition as the Best Mentor in the same category.
Under the mentorship of Ar. Ven Quizon, IDr. Candice Arboleda, and competition heads Ar. RJ Dalmacio and IDr. Lea Eljean Gatpandan for the architecture and interior design categories respectively, the young designers have transcended and were able to conquer one of the most prestigious competitions in the country.
Nippon Paint Young Designer Award (NPYDA) was initially launched in 2008 to encourage interior design and architectural students to foster innovation and creativity in design implementation of their respective outputs.
