THE BOARDING HOUSE: Explore an alternate Philippines with Teatro 77’s two-act play

On Nov. 7 and 12, Teatro 77’s first fully online theater production “The Boarding House,” goes live here.

By Marinel Peroy | Friday, 6 November 2020

Produced by 117 Theater Arts students, a non-linear and exploratory designed website was made prior to the upcoming shows of THE BOARDING HOUSE slated for Nov. 7 and 12. Check out its interactive map online and delve into the Lunan City, and familiarize yourselves with Eñya Boarding House’s residents.

As the play was scheduled on Nov. 5 for its first act, the production team decided to postpone its original premiere due to the inclement weather that may cause technical glitches. Hence, Premiere shows will be Nov. 7 (Act I, 7 p.m.) and Nov. 12 (Act II).

Written by Phoebe Lina, “The Boarding House” (TBH) focuses on seven artists having identity crises in a surreal setting—an alternative Philippine universe. As Teatro 77’s TBH is a play you can play through, audiences are allowed to choose which episode to watch next. In addition, the interactive website lets you pick the preferred room to view when the play premieres; making the viewer’s have a unique experience designed for a “new normal” theater show.

In an online interview with The Benildean, Production Manager Kyla Isabel Ravago shared that this is the team’s longest production by preparing THE BOARDING HOUSE for five months; and as they have cancelled “Kung Paano Maghiwalay” play last August.

Serving as a comeback and only production this year, TBH is a product of a collaborative project turned avenue for artists of all disciplines to go back to doing what they love, said Ravago.

Who’s inside the boarding house?

Immersing into the dimension of the alternate Philippine universe, THE BOARDING HOUSE revolves around the place of Manila that was acquired by an umbrella corporation 30 years ago, Owlways Watching and Listening (O.W.L Corp.).

Now called as the Lunan City, “it is currently inhabited by a diverse range of mythical creatures, sentient objects and structures, and humans all collectively referred to as "Lunanites," uttered by local radio star Berke.

  • demi-gorgon with mommy issues
  • narcoleptic immortal psychic

Get to know more about their identity crises in the alternate Philippine universe by following each character strive to stay indoors due to the toxic outbreak in the city.

TBH, it’s for the “new normal”

Meanwhile, as Ravago believes, theater and other forms of art reminds a “life beyond our everyday situations.”

Nonetheless, Ravago concludes with a statement: “The experimental nature of the production also makes it something to look forward to for, I assure you, this production is nothing like you’d expect to see and hopefully that makes it even more exciting!”

In addition, THE BOARDING HOUSE is CSBLife accredited. Non-Benildeans can also access the website even after the scheduled shows. English and Filipino subtitles will also be shown.

Crafting assistance for Filipino artists

Teatro 77 is the production house of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s 117 students from the Theater Arts program. The team envisions to “innovate a new quirk in the Theater industry, while shaping the potential of Philippine Theater.”

Teatro 77 supports Filipino artists by also being a non-profit organization. At the moment, Teatro 77 has partnered with Para Sa Sining #HomeNotAlone campaign that seeks to help the Philippine Arts Community.
