Written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone, “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” is a mockumentary film that follows the life of a notable bit player in her preparation for her first fictional nomination at an award show despite working in the industry for 30 years. The film also garnered six awards in the 2011 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival, one of them was a deserving Best Actress Award for the lead role.
Dubbed as the “Queen of Philippine Horror Movies,” the late Lilia Cuntapay, who passed away in 2016, was known for her long ash-colored hair and facial features which resemble that of a typical bruha. When Cuntapay landed multiple supporting roles after her debut as an aswang in Shake, Rattle & Roll 2 (1990), she became far too well-known for being associated in horror movies that other people wouldn’t hire her because of it and doomed her to constantly play as an “extra.”
Beyond the “extra” spooky role
Playing as the role herself, the independent feature film shows how Cuntapay’s eerie appearance can both be a blessing and a burden throughout her career. With the two-hour run of the mockumentary, its comedic aspect isn’t its strongest element, but it is commendable.
There are a few awkwardly delivered humorous lines that don’t come off smoothly from Cuntapay which can taint the reality being portrayed; though she redeemed herself in the latter part of the story. Furthermore, as it transitioned into a dramatic setting, Cuntapay’s acting would surely move you in her potential and effectiveness in showing one’s emotions.
Director Jadaone’s heartwarming take on Cuntapay’s career did justice to paying tribute not only to her as a talented artist, but also to those who dream and pursue the silver screen. The film depicted how cruel the industry can be with its spotlight and glamor around—focusing only on those they deemed important enough.
However, it can also be forgiving at times. Despite its recurrence to other artists within the industry, there are still who take care of their craft and message to convey for its audience. “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” would not exist if it wasn’t for Cuntapay’s fascinating history with Pinoy cinema.
Ultimately, this mockumentary film represents an artist who deserves better. This showcases how a three-decade actress like Lilia Cuntapay could portray more than being a recognized “creepy old lady with long hair” in a glimpse of horror movies if it wasn’t for this film.
