When creative instinct takes shape in Impulse: Unbound

Where creativity takes on new forms and exceeds expectations.

“Impulse: Unbound,” the portfolio exhibit of De La Salle-College of Saint Benile’s Multimedia Arts (ABMMA) students, showcased creative works that pushed the boundaries of artistic expression from Nov. 5 to 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Fundacion Sansó, San Juan City.

Anchored on the celebration of the first spark of an idea, the exhibit highlighted 80 works that demonstrated experimentation, risk-taking, and the discovery of something unexpected and translating it to something concrete and worth admiring. Centered on freedom and individuality, the art pieces represented the artists’ willingness to create something that is uniquely their own.

The pulse

Exhibit Director and ID122 ABMMA student Nina Beatrice Delgado expounded on this year's theme, explaining that the word “unbound” speaks of freedom: the freedom from the expectation and pressure to fit into a particular style.

“We want our artists to trust their instincts, explore their ideas, and give themselves permission to make something that feels genuinely theirs,” she said, emphasizing the importance of breaking away from the notion that there's only one way to create.

Every artwork displayed at the exhibit represented someone's impulse to create. From illustrations, photographs, ceramics, and mixed media outputs, each one highlighted the artist's deliberate choices and individuality.

Delgado closed by encouraging guests to look beyond first impressions and to delve on the details that challenge and catch their attention. “At the end of the day, ‘Impulse: Unbound’ is about the freedom to make it your own and the confidence to let it take up space.”

The gist

Maximalism—the idea that more can be more through colors, ideas, expression, and stories—also took center stage in the exhibit.

Delgado stated that maximalism takes on different forms, never limiting itself to just a single definition. For some, it could be loud and vibrant. For others, it could be layered, intricate, and deeply personal. “That's what makes this exhibit exciting…  When you look around, you'll see different styles, perspectives, and ways of thinking all brought together in one space.”

In an interview with The Benildean, Operations Head, exhibitor, and ID123 ABMMA student Tiffany Claire Lam shared her experience on building the exhibit from start to finish and being granted the opportunity to have her artwork be a part of the display. “The reward of accomplishing a successful event was such a fleeting feeling; to know everyone's hard work paid off was an honor to be a part of,” she said, describing her involvement in “Impulse: Unbound” as a rewarding experience.

Lam expressed that the exhibit was “impulsive,” and that it was meant to show that even the “delayed” will always push through. “We will never stop creating art in different mediums with our unlimited creativity.”

She also expounded on how “Impulse: Unbound” ultimately resonated with the Benildean community, emphasizing that falling behind conventional expectations does not limit opportunities for growth and creativity—a message the exhibit wants to convey.

Lam also hoped the exhibit would leave guests amazed and inspired, noting that creativity has no set timeline and that “…even [we], who may be a little late to the world's standards, always [hold] the power to make beautiful pieces.”

Allow the steady impulse to lead and manifest into a stream of ideas worth celebrating with the “Impulse: Surge” portfolio awarding on Nov. 11, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 5/F Theater, Design and Arts (D+A) Campus.
