The Student Publications Unit (SPU), composed of the Benildean Press Corps (BPC) and Ad Astra, won 10 awards in the 16th National Campus Media Conference (NCMC), organized by the School Press Advisers’ Movement Inc. (SPAM) hosted by National University (NU) Clark from Sept. 25 to 27.
On Sept. 25, the opening ceremony was led by Ivan Mayrina from GMA News as the plenary speaker. Simultaneous journalism competitions then followed, including Copyreading and Opinion Writing (For School Paper Advisers), Digital Magazine Publishing, Editorial Cartooning, Editorial Writing, Literary Illustration, News Story Writing, Sports Writing, and Visual Journalism Reels.
In the evening of Sept. 26, the awarding of Publication (Group) Contest: Newspaper and Magazine commenced, wherein The Benildean: Reflection won second place for Campus Magazine of the Year. It also bagged several distinctions on various categories: 1st place in both Best Magazine News Stories and Best Magazine Feature Photo, 2nd place in Best Magazine Cover Design, 3rd place in Best Magazine Feature Stories, and 10th place in Best Magazine Editorial Content.
The last day featured the awarding ceremony of mostly individual categories. Jilyanne Therese Sio, ID124 from the Multimedia Arts (AB-MMA) program and video staffer from Ad Astra, won 3rd place in the English category of the Visual Journalism Reels, while Mikaela Amira Barrosa an ID123 student from the Human Resource Management (BSBA-HRM) program and the News Editor of BPC, nabbed 5th place in the Filipino category.
For the Backpack Journalism competition in the Filipino category, BPC Layout Staffer and ID123 AB-MMA student, Claire Denise Chua, achieved 6th place. In the English Literary Illustration category, BPC Art and Design Editor and ID123 Animation (AB-ANI) student Athaleah Nicolle Paris Bumagat, secured 6th place.
It was then announced by the organizing body that the 17th NCMC will be hosted in Cebu City. To formally close the three-day event, the award for top-performing school in the tertiary division went to Pampanga State University, the reigning champion.
