Returning for its 19th year, Art in the Park fostered a community for inspiring talented artists and art enthusiasts on March 23 at the Jaime Velasquez Park in Salcedo, Makati, as this year’s event saw colorful success.
Art in the Park gathered over 60 exhibitors ranging from galleries, art collectives, independent art spaces, and student groups to present a vibrant showcase of diverse talents. Included in this year’s Art in the Park exhibitors list were Benildean artists who were able to showcase their pieces for fair goers to discuss and share their love for art.
Importance of appreciation
Among the artists was ID124 Bachelor of Fine Arts in Culture-Based Arts (BFA-CBA) student under the name Ray. In an interview with The Benildean he was asked how the event has impacted his artistic journey and the challenges he’s faced, “It's been quite challenging [...] there are so many beautiful artworks.”
He added that “For now, I'm just trying to find my style. [...] But, it's [been] a great experience.” When asked if the College helps foster artists like him, he stated, “Yes. [...] I was shocked when I went there [because] it's a great opportunity for me to develop myself and to improve.”
Events like Art in the Park contribute to the growth of the art community, providing a platform where artists, institutions, and enthusiasts can connect and engage. This inclusion not only strengthens support for local talent but also encourages a broader audience to immerse themselves in the creative landscape. It helps foster a deeper appreciation for the arts in the Philippines.
As Mr. Alaine Zedrick Camiling, chairperson of the Creative Industries Management (AB-CIM) Program in Benilde, highlighted, "If we want to develop more audiences for art, we need to make it accessible, we need to make it inclusive.” Moreover, the presence of not just galleries but also academic institutions, who are also trying to be at the forefront of arts and creative education, further emphasizes the importance of integrating arts into education.
Mr. Camiling added for those aspiring to be part of an event like this, “Be out there,[...] you have to show up, you have to know what's happening in the scene. So, go to openings, go to arts and culture spaces. [...] When I say spaces, these are not just traditional spaces [...] like galleries and museums, because those are not just the [only] spaces where art, creativity, and design happen.”
Art for all
From paintings to pottery and even furniture, Art in the Park offers something for everyone. It’s not just the artists who benefit—the experience enriches both art lovers and curious passersby. Ellie Muñoz, a regular Art in the Park attendee, shared, “[Art in the Park is] a great way to introduce more people to art, especially Philippine art… It’s very accessible, a lot of people come here, there’s a lot of foot traffic… it’s a really good way to introduce more people to art.”
More than just an art fair, the event cultivates a deeper appreciation for Philippine art by sparking conversations between creators and attendees. Rin Ramos, a first-time visitor, shared a memorable experience from her time exploring the park, “For me, I love the pottery stalls, I like their vases and… I enjoy talking to the artists about the [pottery] bags… I think the experience alone of being here and getting to talk to the artists and other people is worth the trip.” She told The Benildean that these interactions not only deepened her interest in the pieces but also allowed her to appreciate the stories behind the art.
By creating a space where artists and attendees connect, Art in the Park nurtures a vibrant community bound by a shared love for art. For many visitors, the opportunity to explore various artistic styles and engage with creators in one space enhances the experience. “Having it in one place… [having] so many artists in one place, makes it convenient for people to explore multiple styles and artists,” Ramos expressed.
Beyond its accessibility, the fair serves as a temporary third space where a community can bond over art that evokes deep emotions, making the experience even more heartfelt.
Art in the Park continues to prove that art is for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned collector, an aspiring artist, or simply someone curious to explore. Muñoz perfectly captured the essence of the event, “I think people should explore art because they don't know what they're gonna find. There's always something for everybody, especially in a place like Art in the Park. There are so many different types of art, so many different artists. You're bound to find something that you're gonna enjoy.”
By fostering meaningful conversations and making art accessible, the fair cultivates a vibrant community that celebrates creativity in all its forms. As each year brings new artists and fresh perspectives, Art in the Park remains a testament to the power of art in connecting people and inspiring appreciation for Philippine culture.
