The stage is set for a historic battle in the NCAA Season 100 finals as the Benilde Blazers and the Mapua Cardinals clash for the first time on the grandest stage of them all. With championship dreams on the line and long-standing title droughts to end, this series promises not only thrilling basketball but a chance to etch their names in NCAA history.

Road to the finals

Meeting twice during the elimination round and splitting the series 1-1, the clashes between the Blazers and the Cardinals were nothing short of electrifying, blending physical intensity with emotional stakes. Their first showdown unfolded on opening day, marking a high-octane start to the NCAA centennial season and fueling sky-high expectations for both squads. In this initial face-off, the Blazers staged a stunning come-from-behind victory, offering an early showcase of their resilience and determination.

The rematch came in the latter half of the season, with both teams vying for the coveted top spot in the standings. This pivotal game mirrored the drama of their first encounter, but with the roles reversed. The Blazers held the lead for most of the game, only to witness the Cardinals orchestrate a remarkable comeback, topped off with a clutch game-winner by Clint Escamis that left the Taft squad in shock. That win allowed Mapua to tie their record with the Blazers and eventually overtake them for the number one spot. The shift in rankings came after the Blazers suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates, ending their reign at the top of the standings.

The Cardinals and Blazers placed first and second in the standings respectively with both teams equipped with a twice-to-beat advantage heading into the final four. Both teams easily dispatched their opponents, as the Cardinals took down the LPU Pirates, 89-79, and the Blazers ousted the defending champions the San Beda University (SBU) Red Lions, 79-63, setting up for another battle between both squads this time around in the NCAA finals.

One of the most anticipated matchups in this year’s finals features a clash between two of the league’s brightest stars. Escamis, the reigning Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player, aims to lead the Cardinals to their first championship in 33 years. Meanwhile, the green-and-white squad, determined to end a 24-year title drought, will rely heavily on the dominance of Allen Liwag.

Both players are the top scorers for their respective teams, making this showdown even more compelling. Escamis has been a consistent force, averaging 16.37 points, 4 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game through the semifinals. Liwag counters with a commanding presence in the paint, posting a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds per game, along with 2.2 assists and 2 blocks. All eyes will be on these two as they battle for championship glory.

Strength in numbers

Beyond the battle of the stars, both teams have also showcased their depth, proving that their success stems from a collective effort rather than individual brilliance alone.

For Mapua, key players like Chris Hubilla, who contributes 13.11 points, 6.42 rebounds, and 1.74 assists per game, and Cyrus Cuenco, with 11.84 points, 3.05 rebounds, and 3.05 assists, provide steady scoring and playmaking. Lawrence Mangubat (8.95 points, 4.05 rebounds, 2.26 assists), JC Recto (7.23 points, 5.62 rebounds, 2.15 assists), and Yam Concepcion (6.11 points, 4.74 rebounds, 1.05 assists) have all stepped up to deliver when it matters, adding crucial support on both ends of the floor.

On the other side, Benilde’s depth is equally impressive, led by Tony Ynot’s all-around performance of 10.6 points, 5.27 rebounds, and 4.27 assists per game. Justine Sanchez has been a force on both ends, contributing 10.37 points, 6.05 rebounds, and 2.21 assists, while Jhomel Ancheta (8.61 points, 3.17 rebounds, 2.72 assists) and Gab Cometa (8.32 points, 2.32 rebounds, 2 assists) have provided stability and consistency in the backcourt all throughout the season.

With both teams boasting strong supporting casts, this series promises to be a true test of which team’s depth and resilience can shine under the bright lights of the finals.

Aside from the stars and the depth of both teams, another highly anticipated storyline is the chess match between head coaches Randy Alcantara of the Cardinals and Charles Tiu of the Blazers, two of the country’s premier collegiate coaches. Both tacticians bring unique strategies and philosophies to the table, adding another layer of story to this finals series.

On one side, Coach Alcantara has built a reputation for fostering discipline and a defense-first mentality, shaping the Cardinals into a well-oiled machine that thrives on tenacious pressure and seamless execution. On the other hand, Coach Tiu has emphasized creativity and adaptability, often making bold adjustments that maximize Benilde’s offensive firepower.

This head-to-head battle of minds will play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the series. In-game adjustments, strategic gambits, and effective rotation management could ultimately tilt the balance in favor of one team. It’s not just a test of the players’ skills on the court but a duel of minds on the sidelines.

Chasing history

For the first time in nearly two decades, both the San Beda Red Lions and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Knights will not be featured in the NCAA Finals, a rare occurrence in the league’s storied history. Adding to the historic narrative, the league will witness a championship clash like never before, as the Benilde Blazers and the Mapua Cardinals meet in the NCAA Finals for the first time in league history. This groundbreaking matchup signals a new chapter in the league, showcasing the rise of emerging contenders.

Beyond the historic milestones, this finals series carries added significance as both teams aim to break long-standing championship droughts. For the Cardinals, it’s an opportunity to reclaim a title they last held in Season 67, back in 1991, when their current head tactician, Coach Alcantara, was still a player. Meanwhile, the Blazers are equally hungry for success, seeking to bring home the championship for the first time since their triumph in Season 76. With decades of waiting on the line, both teams are desperate to etch their names in history once again.

With star power, depth, and strategic brilliance on full display, both teams are poised to give everything in their pursuit of glory. In a season filled with milestones and unforgettable moments, this championship series promises to be a defining chapter in the league's centennial season.
